Weather Eye: Rainy weather will continue

It seems like it has rained for days and days on end but perhaps it is only the dark gray skies of January. The good news is that it is staying lighter later into the evening, no more sunsets at 4:30 p.m. We are gaining on it as we journey toward spring.

Of course, we still have a couple of months left in winter and nature can still pack a punch. Although I see snow levels dropping early next week and our balmy high temperatures dropping back to seasonal normals, no snow or ice on the horizon.

Vancouver’s rainfall tally for the month as of 5 p.m. Wednesday stood at 1.51 inches, about one-half inch below normal. No worries, heavier rain was in the forecast today through Saturday as California gets a brief break from the recent cloudbursts. Yes, the jet stream gently lifted to the north toward us but will sag southward over the weekend and our friends to the south will be back in the floodgates.

Crazy month so far weatherwise, not what I expected but we are always at the wrath of nature in its realm. Last month we ended a few degrees below average with temperatures and so far this month, we are at least 2 degrees above average. Feel the difference? Even with 50 degree-plus weather, when that east wind blows, and it will be off and on the next week or so, it feels downright chilly.

With today’s high temperature forecast around 52 degrees, last year on this date it was 56 degrees for a high temperature. That was some 9 degrees above the normal high of 47 degrees. The record for Jan. 12 was 61 degrees, do you remember when? Easy, two years ago in 2021 during a pineapple express event with 1.89 inches of rain.

Get your holiday decorations put away from outside? Managed that but a little slow on the inside of the house. It was so gloomy last week that I decided to leave indoor holiday trimmings up for a while but now they are cheerfully resting in storage containers in the garage. It will be wet if any outside chores are required the next several days.

Keep dry and we will chat on Sunday and take a look forward and backward to last month’s rainfall.
