Letter: Cluster bombs are ineffective

President Joe Biden has apparently approved sending cluster bombs to Ukraine. Cluster bombs are banned in many countries. Unexploded “bomblets” constitute an ongoing threat to civilian populations. The unexploded little bombs act as land mines on the ground. They maim and kill long after the conflict ends. They are still a significant hazard to people in many countries: Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Syria, the Balkans, Yemen and more.

A simple Google search reveals that cluster bombs are ineffective, lie unexploded on the ground for years and kill long after the fighting has ended. If killing civilians constitutes a war crime, then the use of cluster bombs should be near the top of the war crimes list. The biggest user of cluster bombs? NATO and the United States.
