Letter: Put fireworks issue to a vote

Folks, can we stop all this bickering over fireworks in Clark County and just put it to a vote of the citizenry? Stop blaming the county councilors and claiming they don’t represent the voters on this matter. Let’s vote!

From polls I have seen over the years, 70 percent to 75 percent will vote to keep the ability to celebrate Independence Day with legal fireworks.

Not having a fireworks display put on by the city or county does not help, either. We used to have the greatest fireworks display west of the Mississippi and this was an alternative to doing them off in your street. I recall last year we had record rainfall in April, above average in May and the fifth highest in June and we could not have a county display because of wildfire damage. Are you kidding me? And they are being shot off on a barge out in the river!

Then the excuse was that there was not enough security for the event from the police or sheriff’s department. I have been to many Fourths in Vancouver and there never was any great need for security.

Let’s bring our fireworks display back and stop the “illegal” fireworks from getting out into the county. Otherwise, I suggest going to Astoria, Ore. They have a great firework display that attracts thousands — and their dogs too.
