Letter: Daybreak needs to straighten up

Nearly a decade ago, our community made the decision to put kids first. It happened when dozens of people stepped forward to commit their time, talent and treasure to close the decrepit, outdated Daybreak Youth Services inpatient treatment facility on Falk Road and transform an abandoned church in Brush Prairie into a state-of-the-art inpatient adolescent drug and alcohol treatment facility.

Time has shown Daybreak Youth Services did not have the systems or people in place to effectively operate this new facility or their treatment center in Spokane. I urge the Daybreak board of directors to again put our kids first: Call off the lawyers and begin an immediate search for a new service provider at both their Brush Prairie and Spokane treatment centers.

The COVID crisis was hard on everyone and the challenges at Daybreak must have been made worse by the epidemic. But many kids’ lives now hang in the balance. Please honor the faith and vision of founder Bill Yakely; be the adult in the room and take immediate steps to get licenses restored, doors reopened and treatment beds back to full capacity.
