Patrick Azevedo used a strong back-nine Sunday to win the Royal Oaks Invitational golf tournament.

Azevedo finished the 54-hole tournament in 9-under par to win by three shots over Austin Spicer.

The University of Wyoming sophomore from Othello won an event that, since its founding in 1957, has attracted many of the Northwest’s top amateur golfers to Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver.

After shooting 1-over 37 on the front-nine Sunday, Azevedo shot bogey-free 3-under on the back nine. He birdied the par-5 13th hole as well as the par-4 14th and 17th holes.

Spicer, from Gresham, Ore., made four birdies on the back nine but also two bogies, including the 18th hole.

Only three golfers in the 192-man field finished under par. Jacob O’Neal placed third in 2-under.

Azevedo was Wyoming’s top golfer this season with a stroke average of 70.73. At Othello High, he won the Class 2A state championship as a freshman in 2017, placed fifth in 2018 and third in 2019.
