Letter: Ban fireworks throughout county

By Sean Gibson, Vancouver

It’s time to permanently prohibit the sale and use of fireworks in Clark County. With summer weather consistently hot and dry, the danger from any fireworks is simply too high. This year’s early start to the countywide burn ban is proof of that.

There are other ways to celebrate the Fourth of July besides putting homes, businesses and lives at risk. Enjoy a day with your family, go to a public event or even take a few minutes to read the Declaration of Independence.

The Clark County fireworks website gives a list of instructions for the safe discharge of fireworks, which only the most conscientious and civic-minded will follow. Those who don’t care won’t, and therein lies the risk. At least if they are banned, those who can’t handle potentially dangerous materials will have fewer opportunities and excuses.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
