Letter: Fireworks are problematic

By Phyllis Waldron, VANCOUVER
Published: June 23, 2023, 6:00am

On reading the front-page article on fireworks (“Fireworks coming soon to Clark County,” The Columbian, June 19), I noted that the agencies said that they had received little or no communications this year regarding problems with fireworks. This is no mystery as all such communications to public officials regarding the hazards of fireworks have been ignored in the past.

It has been made known that fireworks have proven problematic to veterans, people with health issues and animals. I will add that fireworks produce smoke and toxic fumes, which contribute to the atmospheric changes that are occurring. Unfortunately, the bottom line is that “money” outweighs any such concerns. Profits before people. It would be wonderful if our values would change, wouldn’t it?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
