Letter: Your vote counts

By Peter Brown, Vancouver

People died in the ’60s so more people could vote, regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation. We organized voting drives to get out the vote. We were beaten and jailed so that more people would vote, without fear, insults or intimidation.

It cost MLK his life, and his sacrifice paved the way for more voters to come forth and be counted. A swelling of support for that essential and basic right was created until one party decided enough. Now we have a systemic pushback at all levels of our society. We had armed attacks by organized groups of representatives, paid by my tax dollars to ensure that the breath of freedom created be extinguished by any means imaginable.

Even a totally legal election has being branded by that party as a fraud and that myth is supported at the highest levels of my country by representatives from only one party, dry cleaned and whitewashed to attack our Capitol.

As we said back then, I fight no more. Well that time is over, starting now. My vote has no color, race or holy writ; my vote will be counted, as will be yours.

Suppression is oppression.
