Letter: Help China reduce reliance on coal

Evidently China has plans to continue building coal-fired power plants to keep up with the demand for electricity. They now have about 1,100 coal-fired plants. We, the United States, have about 220 in use now. About 40 years ago, National Geographic stated that the main cause of glaciers melting was coal dust from the chimneys of coal-fired power plants. So it could slow down the melting of the worldwide glaciers if we could have less coal-fired plants. Mount Rainier, right here in our own state, has the most glaciers in the lower 48 states.

Here in the United States, we are phasing out our coal-fired plants, but China is building more. It seems like it would be a good thing if we could get together a worldwide coalition of countries to work together with China in a friendly way toward building less coal-fired plants and more environmentally friendly ways of generating electricity. We should try to work this out in a way that they would feel like we are doing it to help them out, and not because we feel that we are smarter than they are and are trying to dictate to them how to run their country. Maybe this would help to ease the hostilities between us.
