Letter: Reduce plastic pollution

By Jessica Day, Bonney Lake

As a Washington resident, I see plastic pollution every time I go outside. I cannot remember a time in my life when my walks weren’t blighted by plastic.

With increasing production, there is now even more plastic pollution impacting our lands, rivers and oceans. Plastic runoff affects the smallest marine life to the largest whales, and also us.

This is why the Legislature should prioritize passing bills that reduce plastic pollution, like House Bill 1085. This bill will reduce plastic waste by phasing out certain unnecessary single-use plastic packaging and encouraging reuse.

Recycling is important, but we must reduce the amount of plastics being produced in the first place. Source reduction should be central to any legislation aimed at preventing and eliminating plastic waste harming marine animals, our beautiful state and ourselves. I am urging our legislators to pass this bill, and hopefully, one day, when we go outside, we won’t be plagued by plastic.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
