Letter: Address gentrification issues

Gentrification is an issue that affects many people of color and is defined as “the process whereby the character of a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in, improving housing, and attracting new businesses, typically displacing current inhabitants in the process.” I think it is necessary to address this problem because it has also affected me personally. There are many people of color that live in certain areas due to feeling safe and growing up there but as the white and wealthy start taking over those areas, it seems to have more negative impact. Discrimination against people of color tends to increase and could have a negative effect on their mental health and could also impact the way they live.

Gentrification affects many people to this day and the more areas get invaded, the more the locations change and the original culture of it. If we don’t take action now, this could possibly affect people that you know.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
