Letter: Dysfunction repeats itself

We are old enough to remember the political insanity that undermined Congress’ ability to function for a while, back in the 1950s.

In those times, in both the House and the Senate, fringe political ideology and fear-mongering ran amok in the hands of a few power-hungry individuals. Suspicions and fabrications were given credence despite a dearth of evidence. Many elected officials supplanted their integrity as legislators with dogged, self-serving allegiance to those who fomented divisiveness.

So here we are, a mere 70 years later, witnessing history’s habit of repeating itself. There are examples galore. But recently, bizarre unilateral actions on the part of our barely elected Speaker of the House prompts a reprise of the old question: “Mr. McCarthy, have you no sense of decency?”

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
