Letter: Ensure recyclable containers

I just enjoyed delicious takeout from a local restaurant. The containers for the food were Eco Products #7 “Compostable” clear lids and fiber trays. A visit to their website revealed that, for all practical purposes, their products are not compostable because there is no local commercial facility that will take them. That’s true for many brands.

I’m frustrated that well-meaning restaurants and food carts spend good money on “recyclable” containers that don’t live up to their claims. If you’re associated with a food service business, please consider better alternatives: home-compostable paper; #1 clear plastic, which is currently recyclable; and #2, #4, and #5 plastics which are reusable and then recyclable in the Portland area. Withdraw your business from companies that greenwash their image and mislead customers into thinking they are acting sustainably. Diners, spread the word to your favorite eateries.
