Letter: Guns protect us from government

The Founding Fathers had lived through a bloody war for freedom when they wrote the Second Amendment. They knew that without arms the people had no hope of deposing an oppressive government. You don’t have to look far into history to see that a disarmed people are a vulnerable people. Think of the killing fields of Cambodia or the Nazis seizing guns.

The Founding Fathers had it right. The new gun-grabbing laws are being challenged in at least eight different courts. One of them will reach the Supreme Court and all gun-grabbing laws will be struck down.

If you want to stop firearm violence at schools, put a well-trained officer in every school. If you want to stop gun violence on the streets, implement what was successful in New York under Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, “stop and frisk.” Finally, guns don’t kill, people do. Some of the worst mass killings were preceded by worrisome communications to relatives or friends. Figure out a solution to that and you have something going. Don’t try to take away guns from the millions of law-abiding citizens who own them.
