Since 1985, Public Service Recognition Week has been celebrated during the first week of May to honor individuals serving the public interest at the federal, state, county and local level.
Civil servants — teachers, postal workers, police officers, firefighters, health care professionals, and others — provide immeasurable benefit to us all through the services they provide. Many current and retired civil servants are our friends and neighbors. During my federal civil service career, I met many exceptional people doing exceptional work. Since moving to Vancouver, I’ve interacted with exceptional public servants in city, county and state offices.
While this is a good time to say “thank you” to these fellow citizens, we can best appreciate their contributions by learning more about the agencies they work for and the services they provide.
