Prep highlights: R.A. Long stuns Columbia River girls soccer, puts defending 2A state champs into must-win match

R.A. Long scored the only goal of the match in the 23rd minute and held on to beat defending 2A state girls soccer champion Columbia River 2-1 in the 2A district semifinals on Thursday.

The Lumberjills (14-4-0) clinched the berth to state while Columbia River (17-1-1) must now beat Tumwater on Saturday to reach the state tournament.

Tumwater beat Aberdeen 4-1 in a loser-out match.

R.A. Long, the No. 3 team in the 2A Greater St. Helens League, will play at Ridgefield on Saturday for the district title.

Ridgefield beat Hockinson 3-0 in the other district semifinal on goals by Victoria Lasch, Marlee Buffham and Allie Draper. Ella Rorabaugh, Lasch and Ellie Petersen each had one assist.

Hockinson will play Woodland on Saturday with the winner getting a state berth. Woodland stayed alive with a 2-1 win over W.F. West. Addi Stading scored the go-ahead goal in the second half with an assist from Sophia Speranza. Speranza scored the Beavers first goal on a penalty kick.

La Center to face Montesano in 1A district girls soccer final

La Center’s Madisen Newbury scored the golden goal one minute into the second five-minute overtime as the Wildcats beat Elma 2-1 on Thursday in the 1A district semifinals.

Trico League champ La Center (15-2) will play Montesano on Saturday for the district crown to add to their state berths.

Sheala Bradley gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the first half off an assist from Newbury.

Elma drew even midway through the second half.

The winning goal came tic-tac-toe fashion with Bradley passing to Mikaela Bright who passed to Newbury for the finish.

Montesano topped Seton Catholic 3-2 in the other semifinal. CJ Moore scored both goals for the Cougars, who play Elma on Saturday with the winner going to state.

2A district volleyball

Defending state champion Columbia River and last year’s state runner-up Ridgefield are into the semifinals of the 2A district tournament after 3-0 first-round wins on Thursday.

Columbia River beat Mark Morris and will play Black Hills in Saturday semifinal, while Ridgefield beat Washougal and will now play Tumwater in the semifinal. The semifinal winners earn state berths.

Aberdeen later eliminated Washougal in a five-set match, and R.A. Long ousted rival Mark Morris 3-0.
