A high-octane action flick based on a video game franchise tops the DVD releases for the week of Nov. 7.

“Gran Turismo”: Archie Madekwe, Orlando Bloom and David Harbour star in director Neill Blomkamp’s motor sports drama inspired by the true story of Jann Mardenborough, a gamer who won a sponsored driving academy that paved the path to his successful racing career.

“As a piece of purely mechanical, revved-up entertainment, ‘Gran Turismo’ really does work,” writes Tribune News Service critic Katie Walsh in her review. “Audience members threw their hands up with full-throated cheers every time Jann inches up higher in the rankings, such is the appeal of Madekwe’s earnest performance, and the way Blomkamp lays out the stakes with simple but effective visual storytelling.”
