ESTHER SHORT — Nearly 100 roses at the Esther Short Park Rose Garden were recently pruned and mulched for the late fall and winter seasons. Roses need protection from winter winds and cold, and a good layer of mulch over the plant crowns goes a long way toward ensuring each rose makes it through the winter. Twelve volunteers from Fort Vancouver Rose Society worked several hours on Nov. 10 to get the garden winterized. The volunteers were Bob Britt, Dan DeWeese, Jan DeWeese, Kathy Fry, Cheryl Giddings, Mike Giddings, Julie Goggin, Samson Ramirez, Louis Rossetto, Sally Rossetto, Detra Swenson and Jim Swenson. Rob Zimmerman of Soil Builders in Ridgefield donated 8 yards of mulch.
