Group focused on flood risks of Toutle, Cowlitz rivers honored

LONGVIEW — A local organization aiming to address how sediment contributes to flood risks at Spirit Lake and the Toutle and Cowlitz rivers was recently recognized for its work to strengthen the region’s economy.

The National Association of Development Organizations, based in Washington, D.C., honored Spirit Lake/Toutle-Cowlitz River System Collaborative last month for its creative approaches to advancing regional economic development and improving quality of life, according to a press release from the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Council of Governments.

The council of government represents the collaborative.

Other collaborative members recognized in this award are the Washington Department of Ecology, Washington Department of Natural Resources, Cowlitz Indian Tribe, Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation, U.S. Forest Service, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, NOAA Fisheries, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Federal Emergency Management Administration, Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board, city of Kelso, city of Castle Rock, city of Longview, Port of Longview, Cowlitz Conservation District, and the Cowlitz County Cowlitz PUD.
