Letter: We deserve better from leaders

Ask any American what the most important issues are and ZERO will answer the Senate dress code, pulling a fire alarm, or vengeful accusations that lack evidence.

And while some might say they’re worried about immigration or the “Deep State,” real answers would include personal effects of the economy. The list includes, but is certainly not limited to student loan payments restarting, bankruptcy rates skyrocketing, rent increases that are putting more people on the streets, preventable diseases that are killing people because health care is an unaffordable luxury, child poverty rates that have more than doubled since Congress let child care tax exemptions lapse, and tax dollars subsidizing fossil-fuel companies despite reaping record profits and poisoning our communities.

Republicans continue to dodge and obfuscate on the real issues that have destroyed the American Dream. It’s even more of a shame that we have to combat the hate their rhetoric encourages rather than being able to hold Democratic officials to their promises. Even the best among our elected officials can’t be held to account because we have to focus on preserving democracy. We deserve better.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
