Weather Eye: One more day with highs in the 80s before cooldown

Thanks to those autumn-like east winds, the thermometer shot into the mid-80s Friday. Wind gusts at least along the Columbia and below our foothills were gusting between 20 and 30 mph. The temperatures around 85 degrees felt pleasant due to the dry air, unlike a more summer-like reading.

We’ll have one more day of highs in the 80s as easterly winds slowly subside. It will be pleasant on Sunday, with cooler air making for highs in the 70s. On Thursday, we managed to reach 80 degrees, so I expect a three-day run of highs at 80 degrees or better. Not bad for October.

Last October, we recorded 11 days with highs in the 80s. The last day of 80-degree weather was Oct. 16. It’s hard to say if we could manage another 80-degree day after Saturday, but the weather does surprise us at times, doesn’t it?

Rain and wind will return on Monday and last into midweek. The rain could be moderate to heavy for a while late Monday.

I see fair skies late next week, but no east winds in the offing to help us log another 80-degree high temperature. But that is a ways out, so we’ll take another look at the extended forecast.

With this current episode of easterly winds and warm weather, do you have an invasion of those pesky stink bugs? I have had readers notify me of swarms of them on the south side of the house, and despite windows and doors being shut tight, they still migrate inside. I haven’t seen any lately, but many of you have. It has been an annual ritual for the past decade or so, it seems, when we have warm to hot weather in the fall.

I did have an indoor invader a few days ago when we had those soaking rains. I noticed a green tree frog behind my kitchen sink comfortably among the African violets near the window. That was a first.

About a week into the month, Vancouver is running warmer and drier than average. Sound familiar? The record highs for Friday and today are 89 degrees, which will most likely remain in the record books.

Enjoy the great weather this weekend before a few days of rain and breezes. Next weekend may be dry if you miss the pumpkin patch this weekend.
