Small earthquake felt in Puget Sound region

SEATTLE — A brief, short tremor shook homes Sunday night in the Puget Sound region, including in the Seattle area.

The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network recorded a 4.3 magnitude earthquake at 7:21 p.m., south of Port Townsend in Scow Bay, between Indian and Marrowstone islands. The depth was about 35 miles.

There is no tsunami risk, according to the National Weather Service. And there were no reports of significant damage as of Sunday night.

The U.S. Geological Society classifies the earthquake’s intensity as “light shaking.” It was lightly felt in Victoria, B.C., according to Earthquakes Canada, and as far south as Olympia.

The earthquake is the first in Washington state with a magnitude of 4 or higher since 2019, according to PNSN. In July of that year, a 4.6 earthquake near Monroe rumbled through the Seattle area. A second quake followed a few minutes later, followed by smaller aftershocks.

Sunday’s earthquake was detected by ShakeAlert, a notification system that delivers alerts directly to smartphones, but the strength was too small to issue a mobile alert, the PNSN said.
