Letter: Find alternative to fireworks

I am not against people having fun, showing their patriotism or making a profit from fireworks. However, Clark County is no longer the rural area of years ago. Because of this shift, problems now exist that we did not have in the past. We need to be realistic.

We have a portion of the population who for medical reasons suffer adversely from the sounds, noise and fumes from the use of fireworks. We have more animals in close proximity to explosions. They are being negatively impacted, too.

The typical length of fireworks use is 10 days and the daily use often lasts close to 2 a.m. No regard for neighbors. The number of reported fires has increased. Dwellings of innocent people damaged and destroyed.

From an economic standpoint, most fireworks are produced in foreign countries. We do not profit from the manufacture and sale. I do acknowledge there is a monetary gain currently for the local commercial vendors. Apparently, the once advertised purpose for sales by nonprofits to fund projects is no longer valid.

We need to find new ways to celebrate the Fourth of July that will show our patriotism and love for our country without the problems associated with fireworks.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
