Letter: Be thoughtful about voting

By Judy Weber, La Center
Published: October 18, 2023, 6:00am

I opened my Voters’ Pamphlet this morning and discovered that three of the five running for the La Center school board had submitted no information. My immediate reaction was, “What are they hiding?” Other possibilities are that they aren’t good at meeting deadlines, that they don’t understand how to submit information, that they are taking voters for granted or that these incumbents are arrogant and unresponsive to voters.

I could go on but instead I’ll just rely on what my grandmother used to say, “Don’t buy a pig in a poke.” That translates into “Do not vote for anyone who does not clearly explain who they are and what they stand for.”

School boards are very important and it is essential that we understand the perspective of anyone who asks us to elect them. You always have the option to write in someone you know and trust or leave those positions blank when you fill out your ballot.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
