Weather Eye: August was first month with above-average rainfall since April

We got a good soaking on that last day of August, with Vancouver officially measuring .59 inch of rain. That brought our final tally to .69 inch. Our average rainfall for August is .52 inch. It was the first month with above-average rainfall since April, when we had over 5 inches of rain, twice the normal amount.

Thursday’s high of 66 degrees was the coolest high temperature of the month but short of the coolest high of 59 degrees set in 1973. It was also the coolest high temperature here in Vancouver since June 19. We still managed to end up 4.6 degrees above normal for the month.

What is in store for us weatherwise in the next week or so? Today will be mostly sunny, with highs in the 80s, and then another weather system affects us, but this time only a glancing blow as it meanders across southern British Columbia.

Rainfall amounts Sunday and Monday will be quite light, with some locations getting only a trace, mainly in the foothills.

The rest of next week will have varying clouds and seasonably cool temperatures, with afternoon highs in the 70s.

Our average high is now 80 degrees. It will slip into the 70s next week and fall quickly by the end of the month.

I still don’t see any heat waves; the hot stuff is shunted well to our south. Of course, we most likely will get a few more hot days via easterly winds, perhaps around mid-month. At least the school students won’t be antsy sitting in class next week with hot weather outside.
