WENATCHEE — A BASE jumper who glided onto a cliffside off Highway 97A near Olds Station was rescued Saturday after a failed base jump.

The jumper became stranded on a cliff face about 600 feet in the air amidst loose terrain on a cliff face Saturday morning around 10 a.m., said Sgt. Jason Reinfeld with the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office.

BASE jumpers leap off fixed objects and use a parachute to glide safely down to the ground. Saturday’s base jumper lost visibility during his jump and glided towards the cliff face where he got stuck, Reinfeld said.

The Chelan County Mountain Rescue Team wrote on Facebook they were able to secure a path to the jumper after having to use a hammer drill and bolts to get to the jumper, the result of “low quality of rock” on the cliffside.

The jumper was not seriously injured, only sustaining minor injuries like scrapes.
