Weather Eye: Weekend’s cool weather will yield to warmth next week

It sure doesn’t feel like spring outside, does it? We couldn’t even make 50 degrees on Thursday for a high temperature, and Friday was on the chilly side as well.

Our average high now is 60 degrees. Vancouver’s 49-degree high Thursday was the coolest in nearly a month. The cool weather will remain with us through the weekend before we slowly transition to a drier and warmer air mass by next week. 70 degrees once again? I believe so.

Friday was the anniversary of the Vancouver tornado that occurred on April 5, 1972. It killed six people and did millions in damage. I remember that day well. I was driving southbound over the Interstate Bridge. It was dark as night, with heavy rain and hail.

Although tornadoes are rare here in the Northwest, we always keep a sharp eye out when an active cold front arrives. Mostly, we observe cold core funnels that don’t touch the ground.

Next week, it will be warm enough to stain the deck or paint the house. It’ll be a good opportunity to cut the grass, wash the car or prepare the garden for spring planting.

Our earliest 80-degree high in April was April 2, 1944, with a high of exactly 80. I do not see any 80-degree weather on the immediate horizon. I bet some of you wish we would have a repeat of April 2016, when we enjoyed six days of 80 degrees or better.

Keep warm, dash between those April showers, and we will chat next week.
