Weather Eye: After Wednesday, damp spell will be upon county

Our warm and sunny weather lingers and will continue into Wednesday before a much-needed damp spell is cast down upon us. As of Monday, Vancouver was running an inch and a half below average with the rainfall. The latter half of the week and into the weekend will help us get somewhat back to average for the month.

With rain amounts way over an inch below average, I don’t think the upcoming five days of those April showers will bring us back to normal, but it appears one embedded storm could dump one-half inch of rain around the county.

So it appears the remainder of the month after midweek will be back more in tune with a usual April regime. We’ll see what happens later next week, if nature can keep up the rainy and cooler pace. Speaking of cooler, after the dry cold front went through over the weekend, overnight lows dipped into the 30s with scattered frost. Vancouver’s low Sunday was 36 degrees and 39 degrees on Monday.

Despite many days in the low 40s and low to upper 30s, Vancouver is running 1.7 degrees above normal for the average mean temperature. Think those 70-degree days had anything to do with that? Yep. I must admit, I could get quite comfortable with 70-degree high temperatures each day. I see the National Climate Center is calling for below-normal temperatures for the rest of the month and rainfall to be near normal or slightly above.

As I say, April can be a fickle month of sorts with some unpredictable weather thrown in. Cold-core funnel clouds, maybe even a small tornado here and there after a vigorous cold front and the usual fare with clouds, showers and hail.

I can think of April 2011 when it was quite chilly and 3.4 degrees below normal for the month. April 2022, with two recorded days in the 70s, ended up 3.4 degrees below average. Of course, we had a couple of snowy days thrown in as well. Remember those? April 2022 also had 5.41 inches of precipitation, which included melted snowfall. What about last year? Vancouver measured 5.18 inches of rain and the average mean temperature was over 1 degree below normal. However, one bright spot was 88 degrees on April 28, 2023.
