One person was injured early Thursday morning while trying to rescue pets from a two-alarm fire in a Washougal apartment building.

The Camas-Washougal Fire Department responded to the fire at 3:45 a.m. The fire burned through the roof of an apartment building in the 2200 block of Main Street and damaged neighboring units.

Crews had the blaze under control about 5 a.m. but remained on scene for more than six hours.

One person with burns was taken to a hospital, said Bryan Rachal, city of Camas spokesman.

According to KATU-TV, the injured person had tried to save the pets in the burning apartment. Rachal did not know the status of the pets.

The Vancouver Fire Department, East County Fire and Rescue and Washougal Police Department also responded to the fire.

The fire’s cause is under investigation, Rachal said.
