Scammers are calling Clark County residents, pretending to be from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office or an attorney representing a family member, and requesting money, the sheriff’s office warned.

In these scams, the caller pretends to be from the sheriff’s office and claims the call recipient needs to pay a fine to avoid being jailed, according to a news release.

Law enforcement will never call to request money, cashier checks, Bitcoin or any other form of payment from a citizen for any reason, according to the sheriff’s office.

Another common phone scam, the agency warned, involves someone pretending to be an attorney representing the recipient’s family member who has been in an accident. The caller then asks for money to bail the family member out.

The sheriff’s office recommends verifying the family member is in need of assistance by calling them directly, or call 911 to verify or report the situation.
