A prequel exploring villainous origins tops the DVD releases for the week of Feb. 13.
“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”: This return to the dystopian world of “The Hunger Games” follows the young adulthood of Coriolanus Snow and his rise to power six decades before the events of the original film. Starring Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler, with franchise veteran Francis Lawrence directing.
“The film is essentially the ‘Star Wars’ prequels of the ‘Hunger Games’ world, as we watch Coriolanus turn from an idealistic young man to a power-hungry sadist, in the same way we watched Anakin Skywalker become Darth Vader,” writes Tribune News Service critic Katie Walsh in her review. “The problem? George Lucas took three movies to show us Anakin’s fall into darkness. Lawrence, and screenwriters Michael Lesslie and Michael Arndt, try to do it in one overstuffed installment.”
