Julian Levi’s letter (“Accept Israel’s right to exist,” Our Readers’ Views, Feb. 16) assumes facts not in evidence. No state ever, in the history of the world, has had a “right” to exist. States exist because they, their neighbors, and other stakeholders agree that they should exist.
Far too often in history, disagreement has led to wars and violence. The 1947 “partition plan” of the United Nations most certainly did not have the agreement of Palestinians as well as the surrounding countries in the Middle East, and certainly the U.N. as well as Zionists had no right or standing to decree that Palestinians could not live in their own country. Hence we have the current continuation of the century-old war between Zionists and those who fight to liberate Palestine.
One can flip the narrative of Mr. Levi’s missive. Does he accept Palestine’s right to exist? Does he accept Israel’s culpability in the Gaza genocide? Does he denounce terrorism committed against Palestinians?
It’s time the U.S. was truly even-handed in the treatment of both Israelis and Palestinians.
