TACOMA — A teen passenger in a car driven by a 16-year-old girl was shot in the head and police are looking for the shooter in an apparent road rage incident in South Hill Monday evening, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The WSP said the girl was driving a black 2001 Lexus sedan eastbound on 176th Street just after 6 p.m. with an 18-year-old male front seat passenger. The road rage incident occurred between the teens’ car and an unknown vehicle as they were passing 78th Avenue.

As the two vehicles approached Meridian Avenue East, about 1 1/2 miles further, an occupant from the unknown vehicle threw an object at the Lexus. Both cars then turned south onto Meridian. As the teen driver accelerated away, a single shot from the suspect’s vehicle was fired in her direction.

The bullet entered the rear windshield, passed through the passenger’s headrest and struck him in the back of his head, according to the WSP.

After the shooting, the unknown vehicle fled the scene. The passenger’s injuries are not life-threatening, the WSP said.

The teens were unable to provide an accurate description of the suspects or their vehicle, the WSP said.

Anyone who witnessed any part of the incident is asked to contact WSP Det. Travis Calton at 360-918-4032.
