The second man who cut power to thousands of Pierce County homes in 2022 was sentenced Friday in federal court to three years of probation, including one year of home confinement.
Matthew Greenwood, 32, pleaded guilty in April for his role in damaging four substations in Puyallup, Spanaway and Graham on Dec. 25, 2022. He said that he and co-defendant Jeremy Crahan, 40, disrupted power so they could break into ATMs and businesses to steal money.
Greenwood and Crahan both faced federal charges of conspiracy to destroy energy facilities.
Crahan was sentenced last month to 18 months in prison.
The Christmas Day attacks left more than 30,000 Puget Sound Energy and Tacoma Power customers without electricity, sparked a fire and sowed concerns about the security of the region’s electrical grid. Officials arrested and charged both men in the following days after analyzing cellphone records and surveillance footage from one of the substations.
Greenwood and Crahan, both from Puyallup, also plotted to fell trees to take out power lines, prosecutors said, but were arrested before they could execute that part of the plan.
