Amtrak extends suspension of train service through Tuesday morning

Amtrak has suspended its Seattle to Portland train service through Tuesday morning, following a landslide north of Vancouver that has disrupted travel this weekend.

The slide south of Kelso blocked the railroad tracks early Saturday morning and triggered a 24-hour moratorium for all passenger trains per BNSF Railway rules, said Janet Matkin, a spokesperson for the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Amtrak originally expected train service to resume at 9:30 p.m. Sunday. But it extended the suspension Sunday evening through 10:45 a.m. Tuesday. It expects tracks to reopen at that time.

Trains previously scheduled to end their runs in Seattle will instead end in Portland. Buses will transport passengers between Seattle and Portland, Matkin said.

Amtrak asks customers to call or text 1-800-USA-RAIL for traveling assistance.

There are six daily round-trip Amtrak Cascades trains between Seattle and Portland and one Amtrak Coast Starlight train. A landslide in early December cut train service between the two cities for days.
