Letter: Change recycling programs

When our girls were young, we wanted them to earn their “spending” money. One way was to collect newspapers and cans. However, they never went through trash cans to do this. They actually acquired quite a few customers who saved their recyclables for them. They made money and lesson learned.

What we have now is people going through our recyclable bins and exchanging the cans/bottles for money either for survival or to buy drugs (“Can collectors’ rummaging rankles Clark County residents,” The Columbian, Feb. 21).

My thought is that maybe an extra charge when buying a product should be discontinued. Therefore, that would end people going through our recyclable bins and put an end to those seeking easy money.

I do believe that most of us want to recycle but want to be sure our efforts are for the city programs. As for the homeless who need money, hopefully the programs we have will be expanded to help them survive.
