Letter: Focus on alternative fuels

In our rush to electrify everything in the mistaken belief that we can defeat climate change, we will only exacerbate the problem and rapidly destroy the planet.

Electric vehicles are pure filth in motion, from the incredibly polluting batteries to the actual implementation of the charging stations, the majority of which will be connected to the existing grid fueled by everything including tar sands, coal, fracked gas and nuclear.

The rosy pictures of nonpolluting cars and trucks is a lie, foisted on us by one group of businesses and their additional income companies. The car and truck makers are touting the elimination of internal combustion engines and ignoring all the advances to date from sustainable airline fuels to biodiesel, ethanol, hydrogen and others still in line and being evaluated.

Idling school buses powered by 20 percent biodiesel reduce pollution by up to 60 percent, while allowing school boards to save millions on replacing their rolling stock with cheaper, standard equipment and fuels that could even be made from local feed stock (waste cooking oils, among others).

If the city were serious, it could envisage making its own fuel.
