Letter: Save school libraries

Who doesn’t love libraries? Who wants more technology to replace books? Evidently, the Evergreen Public Schools does. Don’t they realize that students excel in schools with full libraries?

In the school where I have volunteered for many years, I observe our amazing librarian interacting with students. In her gentle way, she teaches them about culture, books, telling stories, how to be resourceful and yes, even technology. I have observed the way the kids settle in, finding comfort and peace in this wonderful world of books and learning, a welcome retreat from the busy classroom. Choosing books to take home is really fun. For some, they are the only books in their house.

So, I was sad to receive a call from my daughter in tears, who teaches in the district, informing me that because the district had to cut $10 million, they were closing elementary school libraries. This will be one more bad choice the district has made, along with hiring poor superintendents who are being paid severance pay. Coaches for teachers is another costly drain on the budget. Teachers don’t need coaches. They are well-trained to teach. Save our libraries!
