Letter: Help preserve Little Mountain

By Thomas Binder, Trout Lake
Published: March 18, 2024, 6:00am

In the heart of Trout Lake Valley sits Little Mountain, which provides a scenic backdrop and habitat to a wide variety of wildlife. The land is owned by Twin Creeks Timber and managed by Green Diamond Resources. Green Diamond plans to harvest 146 acres of Little Mountain, with follow-up herbicide treatments.

Citizens of Trout Lake are very concerned about the impact of this project in close proximity to organic dairies. There is community support for the parcel to be acquired and managed by Mt. Adams Resource Stewards, a nonprofit with a record of sustainably managing forest land.

Mt. Adams Resource Stewards has tried to reach an agreement on alternatives to the harvest. In the interest of profits, Green Diamond is moving forward. Investors in Twin Creeks include the Washington State Investment Board, Oregon Public Employees Retirement fund and California State Teachers Retirement Fund. Twin Creek’s capitalization (in 2017) was in excess of $1 billion. Can a reduced return on 146 acres be of consequence to its investors?

You can provide support by contacting the above investment groups, voicing your support for Twin Creeks working with MARS on alternatives to clear cutting.
