Letter: Elections represent diversity

Last week I experienced the rich diversity of the peoples who constitute the citizenship of our nation. During election cycles, I often spend time at the Clark County Elections Office as an observer. On Election Day, I watched as a critical part of our state’s mail-in voting process works — signature verification. Every voter’s signature is checked. As I observed, I noted names were like these — not actual but used as examples: Sanchez, Nguyen, Grabinski, Smith, Buffalo Boy.

A bit later I took a break. I was standing outside the election office. An elderly couple approached. The wife spoke in accented English guiding her husband into the office for clarification of the mail-in process. She pointed out to me that he was easily confused. I replied that my wife often provided me with guidance.

Curiosity overcame me regarding these fellow citizens. I told her “My people came from Norway years ago.” She quickly offered, “We came from Romania.” It was a profound moment. Another example of the wonderful diversity of this nation. Furthermore, once again I witnessed a free and fair voting process conducted with the utmost security. I won’t forget the 2024 primary election.
