Letter: Leave animals in natural habitat

Wild animals kept in captivity goes against animals’ natural adaptations and thus is inherently detrimental to their well-being. Humans profit from the animals purely for entertainment. There is no regard for their well-being; removed from their families, “trained” to perform ludicrous acts (elephants balancing on huge balls), all this causes serious health issues and can lead to self-harm.

The movie “Blackfish” presented the public with the truth of how orcas live, small pools compared to the ocean where they belong. The latest story of the kid now owning a pet octopus is tragic. All to appease a child’s curiosity. Cephalopods are smart, curious and full of personality. They belong in the ocean, not in someone’s home.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
