Letter: Local paper provides benefits

This is an unusual message from me. I have written several letters to the editor criticizing The Columbian for its editorial opinions or elected representatives for their votes in Congress. This time, I just would like to thank The Columbian and express my appreciation for its commitment to the community. We have heard of the difficulties facing newspapers and this makes it remarkable that we have here a news organization that continues to produce quality news reporting for not just local, but regional, national and international news.

Not only that, but The Columbian continues to be available in print. It seems local ownership is an important factor.

Besides the attributes I’ve already mentioned, I want to give a shout-out for some specific qualities of The Columbian: historic community involvement, fostering young journalists, investigative journalism, features interesting for a wide-ranging readership (e.g. the Wright Brothers series, the Sports section, the comics, and the recipes of Monika Spykerman). We all need to value the existence of a quality local newspaper that is a reliable and unbiased source for information, and I just wanted to tell you of my appreciation.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
