Letter: Promote safety, respect for all

The opinion piece concerning transgender identity, accommodation and medical conditions was unworthy of your publication, because it relies on simplistic and erroneous assumptions about sexuality and gender identity (“Transgender women and locker rooms,” Froma Harrop, May 27).

Medical and psychological professionals have evaluated the genetic, developmental and personal factors of gender identity and reached the opposite conclusions to Harrop.

Fundamental science: There are more than two genetic combinations regarding sexuality; there are significant variations in the development of individuals with the same genetics; there are individuals born with various external and internal characteristics commonly associated with one or the other gender; gender and sexual identities and characteristics develop independent of physical attributes.

I worked for many years as a professional consultant to government and industry in developing equal, appropriate and respectful policies for public accommodations for trans folks, as for all citizens. To the safety and respect of all concerned. It can be done.

I am outraged by repetition of biased misinformation that denies the existence and humanity of many citizens, and does so intentionally. Especially the most vulnerable citizens.

Stop repeating ignorance and lies. They are used to hurt people.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
