Weather Eye: Enjoy late summer weather, keep an out for woolly bears

How are you enjoying this fine late summer weather? I guess that is the last time I will be asking that as the autumn equinox occurs Sunday at 5:43 a.m., and then we are off and running with the fall season. The weather, however, will remain more summerlike than fall, with fair weather holding and highs in the 70s this weekend.

East winds and warm air aloft will push high temperatures well into the 80s on Tuesday. Will we reach 90 degrees? Possible someone will, but I’ll stick with the upper 80s for now. Wednesday, we drop to 80 degrees or so, and then a cool trough of low-pressure slides by dropping highs below 70 degrees and a small chance of rain late in the week.

The National Climate Prediction Center has updated our situation with La Nina and now they think it will be a weaker event and not lasting all winter.

Our friends the woolly bear caterpillars are making their appearance now, and I have received several emails and pictures from readers. So far it is a mixed bag, but the little fellows are favoring a chilly winter. We need more sampling so if you have a sighting, send me a picture and email to share with everyone.

If out and about looking, remember we are searching for the black and orange caterpillar, not all orange or all black. The caterpillar eventually after two years morphs into the Isabella moth.

Enjoy the beautiful summer/fall weekend and we’ll chat next week. Make plans for the annual trek to the pumpkin patch and get outdoor chores accomplished.
