Wapato planting at Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife RefugeSam Robinson, Chinook Indian Nation vice chairman, performs the song "The Changer" — which honors upcoming change — at Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge east of Washougal on Monday, Nov. 22, 2021. Robinson represents the five tribes of the lower Columbia River, which includes the Cathlamet, Willapa and Lower Chinook tribes in Washington and the Clatsop and Wahkiakum tribes in Oregon. Collectively, their territory stretched from present-day Kalama to Willapa Bay.

Family boat Corahleen returns to water after restorationRick Bishoprick’s father and grandfather built the Corahleen and launched her in 1957. But since 1994, Corahleen has sat on a trailer, parked in Washougal and Ridgefield as it slowly underwent repairs, work done mostly by Bishoprick and his dad. After Stan Bishoprick died in 2013, Rick took on the restoration effort.

Bridging the Border: A Family DividedIn 2017, a Vancouver family’s life was upended. Ramon Flores-Garcia, an undocumented immigrant who had lived in the United States for 20 years and in Clark County, Washington, for nearly a decade, was on a business trip to Everett. There, he stayed at a Motel 6, whose employees gave his information to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He was deported to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, leaving behind his wife, seven children and community ties. Flores now lives in Tijuana, Mexico. His wife and children have left the Vancouver area and live in Chula Vista, Calif., to be closer to him. We parallel their lives on opposite sides of the border, exploring how they’ve managed a family split in two. (Amanda Cowan and Jessica Prokop of The Columbian.
