Weather Eye: Spring will come, someday

Although it will not be a bright sunny warm day for Easter Sunday, at least it will be much quieter than the heavy weather of the past week or so. The upcoming week looks more typical of April with some pesky showers and temperatures still on the cool side.

Snow was reported in many areas of the county preceding the vigorous cold front on Friday. Showers overnight into Saturday morning were of snow above 1,000 feet or so with reports of a trace upwards of two inches in the surrounding foothills. I even observed a mixed rain and snow shower in the Salmon Creek area Saturday morning. Lovely April weather yes?

Despite some heavy showers in March, officially Vancouver came in with another below average rainfall month. Total rain at Pearson was 3.97 inches, which was .24 of an inch below normal. We continued warmer than average with a mean temperature of 48.5 degrees, 2.3 degrees above average. The monthly extremes ranged from a delightful 70 degrees on March 20 to a chilly 27 degrees on March 18.

We have a ways to go before Father’s Day arrives, but thought I would mention a dedicated dad that weather observer Tyler Mode of Vancouver told me about. In an e-mail written to me Friday afternoon he writes, “ As you know this morning it was pouring rain, with a little bit of snow mixed in. Temperatures were in the upper 30s. Apparently my rain gauge was plugged up and my dad noticed so he dawned his rain gear and got out the ladder and cleared it out! What a dedicated dad, I think he’s more into the weather than he leads on!”

What would the world be without dads? Thanks Tyler for sharing. Enjoy the week and remember the May flowers forthcoming!
