After being laid off in 2008, Mike Chinakos turned his energies to refining a novel he had been working on.

The 42-year-old Vancouver man recently put out his first novel, “Hollywood Cowboys,” through on-demand publishing. The book follows the exploits of a Portland rock band in the late 1980s. The band finds worldwide success but becomes entangled in supernatural events.

Chinakos’ experiences working for Portland rock bands two decades ago inspired the story.

He’s been promoting the book on his own, and sold 60 copies in the last month.

“It actually sold far beyond what I was expecting,” he said.

The book is available on amazon.com and Chinakos is working to place it in local independent bookstores.

Even though Chinakos recently landed another job in auto parts purchasing after a year of unemployment, he’s not leaving writing behind. He’s working on another book.

Bits ’n’ Pieces appears Mondays and Fridays. If you have a story you’d like to share, call Courtney Sherwood at 360-735-4561, or e-mail features@columbian.com.
