Community notebook: Local youth soccer teams claim state titles

Two recreation-level youth soccer teams from Southwest Washington won state championships over the weekend.

Claiming Washington Youth Soccer Recreation Cup titles were the boys under-17 Camas-Washougal Rockets, and the boys under-19 Vancouver United Storm.

Four area teams lost in the championship round of the tournament, which was played on Saturday and Sunday at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila.

The title matches were the conclusion of a tournament for recreation-level teams who represented their home district. The tournament included round-robin play and elimination games that qualified the winners for the championship round.

Goals by Erik Powell, Adam Peebles, Warren Weigel and Jacob Shafer helped the Camas-Washougal Rockets overcome two penalty kick goals and hang on for a 4-3 victory on Saturday over the Lake Washington Pumas in the boys under-17 championship match.

The Rockets also edged the Lake Washington team during round-robin play in the state tournament, winning on a last-second goal from Powell.

Players for the Rockets are: Miles Anderson, Vincent Brandon, James Connell, Timothy Cuff, Connor Dyehouse, Nathan Hagstrom, Josh Hill, Burke Johnson, Joe Kashas, Peebles, Erik Powell, Sean Powell, Shafer, Sam South, Duncan Stuart, Corey Suyematsu, Ian Ulmer, and Weigel. Coaches: Wayne Svilar, John Connell and Curtis Suyematsu. This is Svilar’s 11th season as the team’s coach.

In the boys under-19 championship match, the Vancouver United Storm scored a 4-1 victory over the West Seattle Sambas. No details from that match were reported to The Columbian.

In the boys under-12 championship game, the Irish Lions from Everett defeated the West Side Cheetahs 2-0 in a match that went double overtime. It was only the second loss in 18 matches this fall for the Cheetahs. Members of the West Side under-12 Cheetahs are Ethan Adams, Alfonso De La Paz, Nicholas Campbell, Kaleb Fletcher-Haggard, Zachary Freerks, Charles Holmes, Alex Lopez, Colin Marshall, Isaac McClendon, Jacob Neil, Zachary Peros, Cristian Ruiz, Jackson Saylor, and Justin Zilles. Their head coach was Leo Ruiz.

In the girls under-18 title match, HSC Aftershock scored with seven minutes left in the second overtime, the 112th minute of play, to beat the West Side Huskies 1-0.

This is the second consecutive runner-up finish for the Huskies, who finished their season with a record of record of 7-2-3 and allowed seven goals in 12 games.

Playing for the Huskies were: Tegan Walkins, Olivia Mackey, Caitlin McRae, Robyn Thum, JoHannah Joy, Alex Onslow, Delaney Godwin, Ann Wittenberg, Mackenzie Broom, Tia Notti, Hannah Sound, Dakota Williams, Chloe Owens, and Korrina Asmus-Sivongxay. The team’s head coach is Julie Walkins, assisted by RJ Walkins and Steve Strylewicz.

Also in Recreation Cup finals, the South Kitsap Storm defeated the Camas-Washougal New Liberty 2-0 for the girls under-19 title, and the Auburn Strikers downed the Vancouver United Jets for the boys under-18 crown.

Covington MS tops in wrestling

Five Covington wrestlers won their weight classes, and the Colts used their depth to win the team title during the Greater St. Helens League Middle School Wrestling Championships.

Covington outscored runner-up Wy’East by more than 60 points to claim the team title at the district tournament for the second year in a row. The tournament was held on Saturday at Union High School.

The tournament, which concluded the middle school wrestling season for Evergreen and Camas school district high schools, included teams from eight schools competing in 19 weight divisions.

Winning weight class titles for Covington were Landon Lewis (106 pounds), Keaton Spiller (124 pounds), Carl Mason (130 pounds), Ruben Joy (195 pounds) and Trevor Rasmussen (heavyweight).

Champions from Wy’East were Brandon Huft (80 pounds), Shaun Wilson (100 pounds), Ahmon Afenegus (112 pounds).

Champions from Frontier were Tommy Strassenberg (95 pounds) and Marcus Hendrickson (145 pounds).

Champions from Pacific were Ryan Logan (70 pounds) and Alexander Burfanger (155 pounds). Champions from Shahala were Victor Morales (85 pounds) and Joey Gomez (118 pounds).

Champions from Cascade were Damon Thomas (90 pounds) and Dallas Goodpaster (175 pounds).

The champion from Liberty was Maro Gonzalez (165 pounds). Champions from Skyridge were Aaron Sawyer (75 pounds), Joe Driver (136 pounds).

Final team scores were Covington 352½, Wy’East 289½, Frontier 264, Pacific 244, Shahala 216, Cascade 205½, Liberty 180, and Skyridge 164. For the results of all of the first-, third- and fifth-place matches, see the Community Sports Scoreboard.

Mixed bowling tourney concludes

What Ever, a team from the host bowling center, won the 39th Clark County Mixed Bowling Championship Tournament, which concluded on Sunday at Bailey’s Classic Lanes in Vancouver.

The foursome of Kimberly Smith, Laura McDonald, James Vre Non and William Marston finished with a handicap-adjusted score of 3,115 pins. What Ever’s handicap was 789 pins.

In doubles competition, Vickie and Robert Wallace from Tiger Bowl finished on top with a 1,642 including their 393 handicap. Kimberly Smith finished both second and third-place scores in doubles. She teamed with Marston for second place 1,572, and teamed with Peter Anderson to match Donna Davis and Marvin Davis in third place at 1,550.

Top scratch scorers receive plaques, but no prize money. The mixed doubles scratch champions were Michelle Westmoreland and Jon Benson with a score of 1,318. The top scratch score for a team was 2,508 for Spare Parts from Husted’s Hazel Dell Lanes. Bowling for the Spare Parts were Sharron Wannamaker, Jackie Payne, Roger Carsey and Jason Cook.

Vancouver boxer wins amateur bout

Todd Kanekoa of Vancouver Boxing Club defeated Sheldon Tupua from Tillamook, Ore., on Saturday in a 201-pound match during an amateur boxing program in Hillsboro, Ore.

Kanekoa was named the outstanding boxer for his weight class during the show, which was held in conjunction with Silver Gloves competition at Brown Middle School.

Also representing Vancouver Boxing Club at the event were Jose Gonzalez and Max Tishenko.

Gonzales, 8, beat Joel Thompson from Warm Springs, Ore., by decision in a match between 55-pound fighters. The match went three one-minute rounds.

In a 132-pound match, Tishenko, 20, lost a decision to Andres Garcia from the White Center (Wash.) Police Activities League.
