SEATTLE (AP) — About 1.6 million gallons of raw sewage spilled into Lake Washington over the weekend when a King County’s wastewater pump station was overwhelmed by rain.
King County’s Annie Kolb-Nelson says the pump station in Medina began having problems around 1 a.m. Sunday. KING-TV reports sewage flowed into the lake over a period of 17 hours.
Kolb-Nelson said Tuesday that initial test samples show elevated bacteria levels in the immediate area where the overflow occurred on land. The county is awaiting more test results.
She says there remains a public health risk but that the county is continuing to monitor water quality.
