A cow wandering in the center lane of Interstate 5 was blamed for an accident that sent a Kelso man to the hospital late Wednesday.

The accident occurred at 11:03 p.m. in the northbound lanes, about three miles south of Ridgefield.

The Washington State Patrol said Edgar Tello-Lopez, 36, was driving his 1992 Honda Civic toward Kelso when he suddenly came upon the loose cow standing in the center lane.

Tello-Lopez received a cut right hand and complained of head and neck pain, and was transported to a local hospital to be examined.

The cow was put down and the Honda was totaled.
